Sexual Assault Awareness Music Vid–Supergirl S.V.U.

April 202010

As many as one in four women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime. In this episode of Law and Order, Special Victims Unit, undercover detective Olivia Benson is nearly raped by the attacker of a young victim she’s been working with. Soon she is to realize that violence against women is commonplace in the predominately male-run corrections center.

For information or help, go to: http://www.rainn.org.

Remember, abuse is never the victim’s fault. If you or someone you know has been or is being hurt, tell someone. Seek justice.

Rihanna photo leak

LAPD investigates Rihanna photo leak
Rihanna

The Los Angeles Police Department has launched an urgent inquiry into the leaking of a photograph showing the battered face of the Barbadian pop star Rihanna after an alleged attack by her boyfriend, the singer Chris Brown.

The photograph, posted last night on the celebrity gossip website TMZ.com, shows the former beauty queen’s face covered with bruises, scratches and swelling. The close-up shows a welt above each eyebrow and marks on her cheeks and around the lips.

TMZ did not say how it obtained the photo, when it was taken or by whom, but the LAPD immediately launched an internal investigation and said that it “has the appearance” of a photograph taken during a domestic violence investigation.

Mr Brown, 19, was arrested on February 8 and booked on suspicion of making felony criminal threats after an altercation with Rihanna at a pre-Grammy party.

Rihanna, who won a Grammy for her mega-hit Umbrella last year, turns 21 today.

In line with its policy, the LAPD has not identified Rihanna – whose real name is Robyn Fenty – as the victim of the alleged assault and did not mention her by name in last night’s statement.

The photograph published by TMZ clearly shows a tattoo of Roman numerals on her left shoulder identical to a “bonding tattoo” the singer has which shows her best friend’s birthdate.

The LAPD said in its statement that it took seriousy its “duty to maintain the confidentiality of victims of domestic violence” and had launched an immediate internal investigation into the leaked photograph as well as filing a “personnel complaint”.

“A violation of this type is considered serious misconduct, with penalties up to and including termination,” it added.

The Department asked members of the public with information about the leaked photograph to contact them.

Domestic violence affects males, too

March 122010

Men trapped in abusive relationships. Some of you may be thinking, Did she just write men? Some say there is a double standard for men who are the ones being abused.

But, one local woman says that needs to change.

Lizabeth Stahl knows the pain firsthand. For her, the holidays are meant to be a time to spend with family. But, this will be the seventh Christmas she must try to celebrate without her son, James, also known as “Jim Eddy.”

Lizabeth smiles as she remembers her son, I wish you could have met him. He was always the clown, just have you laughing!

But, that laughter is now silent. Almost seven years ago, at the age of 34, James was killed by his abusive, live-in girlfriend. Now, Lizabeth honors James with an altar in her breakfast nook. Pictures of James and Jesus, crosses, candles, and dried flowers from his funeral adorn the table.

Until now, Lizabeth has grieved quietly. However, she feels as Christmas approaches, now is the time she should open up about something that has caused her, and her children and grandchildren so much pain.

She recalls, From what I was told at the funeral, from people at work would hide him, to protect him from her but he would always go back.

She hopes her sons murder will help give a voice to men who are either too afraid or too embarrassed to reach out.

Through tears, Lizabeth says, I cant bring him back and my arms ache to hold him but hopefully he can help someone else.

She says her message is one of hope: If I could give a gift at Christmas, if James could give a gift at Christmas, it would be to help; if it was just one man.

National statistics say one out nine men will be abused by a loved one in their lifetime. And, there is help.

The Bexar County Family Justice Center provides free legal services, counseling and other assistance to victims of domestic violence — both men and women. The phone number is (210) 208-6800 and the Web site is bcfjc.org. Another place to turn is the Family Violence Prevention Services also located in Bexar County. The number to FVPS is (210) 733-8810 and Web site is FVPS.org. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is (800) 799-SAFE.

Lizabeth relies on her strong faith in God and her children and grandchildren to cope with the loss of her son.

Spotlight on male victims of domestic abuse

March 62010

Those who suffer abuse are now being urged to seek help as part of a nationwide awareness week.

Ian McNicholl told Sky News he had been trapped in a terrifying violent relationship.

He described how his former partner, Michelle Williamson, squirted bleach in his eyes, forced lit cigarettes up his nose and burnt his arms with a hot iron.

She also smashed his shoulder with a hammer with such ferocity that the handle snapped.

“It gets worse without you realising,” he explained.

“You can’t seem to think for yourself or separate fact from fiction. You just want to keep her happy by complying and keeping her happy.

“As bizarre as it sounds, I still loved her.”

As Mr McNicholl found himself on the brink of committing suicide, a concerned neighbour alerted the police and his 10-month ordeal came to an end.

In April 2009, Williamson was sentenced at Grimsby Crown Court to serve a total of 18 years in prison.

Mr McNicholl is now slowly rebuilding his life and is about to have reconstructive surgery on his fractured eye sockets.

He told Sky News: “The fear of repercussions certainly stops people from reporting things.

“At one stage I was walking into the same newsagent with a new black eye or injury every day. Nobody said or did anything.”

A new TV advert will be part of a week-long awareness campaign.

Dr Steve Connor from the National Centre for Domestic Violence said: “As a man, it can be difficult to admit that you are being abused.

“As the advert points out, a man might feel ashamed, embarrassed or worried that he may be considered less of a man by speaking out against his abuser.”
