March 152010

This is a story that aired on OETA Public Television’s The Oklahoma News Report in Tulsa Oklahoma as reported by Angela Rosecrans and photojournalist Tim Carson. For more information or to contact us, please go to www.oeta.tv

The verbatim script follows below…

THIS DRAMATIZATION REFLECTS THE REALITY OF WHAT IS HAPPENING IN MANY HOMES ACROSS OKLAHOMA EVERY DAY.

OUR STATE IS FOURTH IN THE NATION FOR WOMEN WHO ARE MURDERED BY MEN.

JUST THIS YEAR, THERE HAVE BEEN 32 DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HOMICIDES AND SEVEN SUICIDES.

TODAY IN TULSA, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ADVOCATES, LAW ENFORCEMENT, AND SOCIAL WORKERS FROM ACROSS THE STATE LISTENED TO PROFESSIONALS IN THE FIELD ABOUT THE EVER-CHANGING LAWS THAT AFFECT VICTIMS AND THOSE WHO HELP THEM.

MARCIA SMITH “it has really become an issue of education and that’s why we have the conference we have trainers that go across the state and train law enforcement officers but the laws change pretty quickly and it’s making sure everyone is on the same page.”

MARCIA SMITH WITH THE OKLAHOMA COALITION AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT.

SHE SAYS THE STATE LEGISLATURE WAS SUCCESSFUL LAST SESSION IN PASSING SEVERAL LAWS THAT WILL HELP VICTIMS.

SUCH AS…

MARCIA SMITH “if a victim has had the first incidence of violence that would be at a misdemeaner level but if they find a pattern that this individual has perpetrated against other victims and there are two more and they can increase that level to a charge of a felony crime.”

OTHER ISSUES THAT WERE TALKED ABOUT INCLUDED THE NEED FOR MORE PROGRAMS IN OKLAHOMA.

LINDA ANDERSON A COUNCELOR AT THE YWCA IN ENID SAYS IN RECENT MONTHS THERE HAS BEEN A SHARP INCREASE OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.

LINDA ANDERSON/ ENID YWCA COUNCELOR “I think the economy has something to do with it I think that summer time we always kind of peak there’s more partying there’s more alcohol involved.”

TRACY REDMON LYALL/ DVIS/CALL RAPE “we know that the economy has brought people into us for services more often and summertime does the same thing. Heat, children being at home brings people into our counseling drives up our calls drives up our numbers at our emergency shelters.”

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ADVOCATES SAY THE ECONOMY IS ALSO CAUSING THERE TO BE LESS SERVICES AVAILABLE.

BUT THAT DOESN’T CHANGE THEIR MESSAGE TO VICTIMS OF ABUSE.

MARCIA SMITH “you need to call and ask for help if you don’t ask we have a wonderful network even with the capacity issues we have a wonderful network of individuals who are willing to help but that individual has to make the call and ask.”

OKLAHOMA’S SAFELINE NUMBER IS 1-800-522-safe (7233).
