Spotlight on male victims of domestic abuse

March 62010

Those who suffer abuse are now being urged to seek help as part of a nationwide awareness week.

Ian McNicholl told Sky News he had been trapped in a terrifying violent relationship.

He described how his former partner, Michelle Williamson, squirted bleach in his eyes, forced lit cigarettes up his nose and burnt his arms with a hot iron.

She also smashed his shoulder with a hammer with such ferocity that the handle snapped.

“It gets worse without you realising,” he explained.

“You can’t seem to think for yourself or separate fact from fiction. You just want to keep her happy by complying and keeping her happy.

“As bizarre as it sounds, I still loved her.”

As Mr McNicholl found himself on the brink of committing suicide, a concerned neighbour alerted the police and his 10-month ordeal came to an end.

In April 2009, Williamson was sentenced at Grimsby Crown Court to serve a total of 18 years in prison.

Mr McNicholl is now slowly rebuilding his life and is about to have reconstructive surgery on his fractured eye sockets.

He told Sky News: “The fear of repercussions certainly stops people from reporting things.

“At one stage I was walking into the same newsagent with a new black eye or injury every day. Nobody said or did anything.”

A new TV advert will be part of a week-long awareness campaign.

Dr Steve Connor from the National Centre for Domestic Violence said: “As a man, it can be difficult to admit that you are being abused.

“As the advert points out, a man might feel ashamed, embarrassed or worried that he may be considered less of a man by speaking out against his abuser.”

February 132010

Monira Rahman is a human rights defender, who works to create a society where women live a life free from the fear of violence. For 17 years, her efforts have centered on ending violence, abuse and discrimination against women in Bangladesh. As Executive Director of the Acid Survivors Foundation (ASF) Monira has raised awareness and brought about institutional change, including new laws to discourage attackers and prevent future violence. ASF runs a 20-bed hospital and treats 600-700 acid attack survivors annually many were attacked years ago and never received care. Through ASF, survivors also access mental health services and employment opportunities Creative Commons license: Attribution-Noncommercial 3.0

Ans unspeakable, uncontrolled practice is called: “Acid Attacks”. Which is becoming a common practice in certain parts of the World. Sulfuric acid, cheap and easily accessible like kerosene, has emerged as a weapon used to disfigure and sometimes kill women and girls.

Acid-throwing is one of the most alarming and horrific forms of violence especially targeted at women. It has a devastating effect on the victims. It inflicts lifelong suffering on them. Even a small amount of acid, sulphuric or nitric, melts the skin tissues, often with the bones underneath exposed or dissolved.

Other effects include:permanent disfigurement,
scars on the face and body, and narrowing of the persons nostrils, eyelids and ears. In most cases, vital organs of the survivors, especially the eyes, are permanently damaged.

It has a catastrophic impact on the lives of the victims psychologically, socially and financially.

Reported reasons for the acid-throwing attacks include the refusal of an offer of marriage, dowry disputes, domestic fights, and disputes over property. Acid attacks leave the victims scarred and often blinded.

Treatment is too expensive for most victims, and is an excruciatingly painful experience.

In my discussion, I share a touching email written by a concerned friend. Then I talk about the complete aspect of domestic violence, from all traits to secret solutions, and reprogramming. I also read a disturbing article about domestic violence resulting a child brutally murdered. I am not a licensed professional, however the discussion is based from my experience, research and opinions. This discussion is very interesting, and I strongly recommend that everyone should watch it. Enjoy!

Men’s rights group file domestic violence lawsuit

December 212009

A men’s rights group claims the domestic violence system is skewed toward women.

Today, a lawsuit was filed in Sacramento court, claiming that male victims don’t get the same help as female victims.

“I remember going to phone 911, saying get here now, I’m going to kill him!” said Ruth Woods.

They fought all the time, often over money. Things sometimes got violent.

“I do it. I do hit. I do slap,” said Ruth.

“She reaches a point when she’s angry, you look in her eyes, there’s no one there,” said Ruth’s husband, David Woods.

Ruth’s longtime husband, David, says he’s a former bouncer who didn’t want to hit back.

“If I hit her, I could kill her,” said David.

But David claims when he went to local agencies for help, for shelter, he got nowhere.

“I was told women are not the perpetrators, they are the victims,” said David.

Now, a lawsuit has been filed, claiming that men are treated unfairly. According to the suit, state law even excludes male victims from domestic violence help. The health and safety code section will pay for things like housing, hotel rooms and counseling–but only for women and not men.

David insists he tried to get help from the group WEAVE–Women Escaping A Violent Environment–but was turned down.

“I was told no by weave four times,” said David.

WEAVE could not comment on the suit, neither could the state; they haven’t seen it yet. But WEAVE is adamant they help men, too.

“We do provide shelter services,” said Michelle Coleman, WEAVE director of crisis services. “At WEAVE we provide services to everyone.”

Tell that to David, who believes that help for men is pretty scarce. In fact, even his wife believes that and his daughter too. They all think when it comes to domestic violence the deck is stacked in favor of women.

“If a man takes it, he’s a pansy, a sissy. If he defends himself, he’s an abuser. He just should be put in jail,” said David.

“It’s a slap in the face to my gender. What is this, animal farm?” asked Maegan Black, David and Ruth’s daughter.

WEAVE insists men do get help, but fewer men ask for it than women do.
