Possible solution to gang violence?

February 182010

Like a lot of people, I am sick and tired of hearing news about gangs and their moronic behavior. Injuring scores of innocent people every year and killing dozens of each other or innocent bystanders. Why should ANY member of ANY gang in the USA be treated any different from a terrorist? They commit domestic terrorism every day. In our malls, school and city streets. They harass, intimidate, abuse, assault and murder each other and others that live in their communities.
I say make them pay hard for their crimes and here are suggestions:
First offense: minimum 1 yr for petty crimes that do not involve injury. Added to national watched list.
First offense resulting in an injury or death. 10 yr minimum sentence and added to national watched list and possibly the no fly list.
Second offense that does not result in injury. minimum 5 yr sentence and added to no fly list.
Second offense that results in injury or death. Life sentence, no possibility of parole.
Third offense that does not result in injury or death. 20 yr minimum sentence and placed under house arrest for an additional 5 yr minimum.
4th offense that does not involve and injury or death. Lifetime sentence with parole after 30 yrs have been served.
Gang members are, in my opinion Domestic Terrorists and should be treated as such.

It might help if we stopped importing new gangs and members. It’s enough to have to deal with our own.

I agree with the first answerer. Let them fight in the war. It’s not so amusing then to be the ones scared to die.

I can’t even understand why gangs exist in the first place.

I agree that people should pay for their crimes, definitely.

But we must also find a way to prevent young people from being sucked into the gang culture.

You are wrong in that your first assumption that all gangs are violent criminals, there are many groups of people that provide positive influences on the community that can be categorized as a gang.

If you focus on those within the gangs that are doing the terrorizing then you are left with a criminal anyway so your argument would be steeper penalties for first time offenders.

As for your definition of Domestic Terrorism … an argument can be made that the police do the exact same thing (and they also have matching colors).

While I do agree that something needs to be done about gang violence, I don’t think classifying them as terrorist will provide any tangible result.
