Is this an example of domestic violence against men on TV?
February 202010
I was watching reruns of the sitcom "Married with Children" and noticed that in one episode Marcy D’Arcy knocks her husband Steve out with a right hook.
The reason she punched him was because he failed to show up at his old employer’s business to get his job back, and instead took the Bundy family to the zoo. Throughout the episode, Steve procrastinates on finding a job and this highly irritates Marcy as she calls him a "leech."
This episode was aired on NOV 26th, 1989 from season 4, the title of the episode is "At the Zoo."
Okay, the show’s humor was based on stereotypes, how does make punching your husband in the face funny?
Yeah, Marcy Rhodes.
Anyways, this type of humor is sketchy and does push the limits, but it stays within its boundaries. Al would never knock Peg out or hit her.
Everyone on that show behaved badly. Thats what the show was about. Bud was a thief, Kelly a whore and Jefferson D’Arcy (who would be the husband Marcy punched if she was Marcy D’Arcy, otherwise she would be Marcy Rhodes, married to Steve Rhodes) was a leech.

That show’s humor was based on stereotypes. Marcy’s behavior is about as accurate as Peg’s constantly leeching off her husband.

That was MWC to you. That TV series made "funny" jokes of violence against kids a´la bullying. Not clean or classy, was it? .

The show is stupid and the humor is very, very dry…which, dry humor usually involves some type of "sick" subject, anyway.
Say what you want, but the biggest percentage of viewers of that program are male…my ex wanted the box set, so I bought it for him to let my kids give it to him for Christmas.

Most of the humor is verbal

People ignore violence when it comes to women hitting men. Have you seen Everybody Loves Raymond? Every other episode Raymond’s wife throws a tantrum and lays into him. Her pet name for Raymond is "Idiot". Not a big deal maybe, but if the Raymond treated his wife this way the series would not last a single episode more.
In the real world men and women are equally likely to be victims of domestic violence, and women initiate it more than men.

Yes. What else would you expect from a key member of FANG, Feminists Against Neanderthal Guys? Amanda Bearse (I think that’s her name), who played Marcy, is a lesbian IIRC.
To be fair, though, Married …with Children was actually one of the more male-positive live action sitcoms in recent memory. Al and Bud Bundy gave plenty of their own back in the gender war. They weren’t punks like Raymond.
