President Bush Creates the Family Justice Center Initiative in 2003
February 222010
On October 8, 2003, President George W. Bush hailed the San Diego Family Justice Center model of co-located services to help victims of domestic violence and created a national initiative to start more such multi-agency centers. In 2005, Congress made Family Justice Centers a “purpose area” in the Violence Against Women Act. Today, there are more than 50 such Centers in the United States and over 50 more in planning stages. Each Center is unique but the focus is similar — trying to identify all needed services for victims of family violence and their children and then putting those services under one roof so that victims don’t have to go from agency to agency and place to place to get the help they need.
