The Women’s Health Data Book Report — Violence Against Women indicated that:

* More than 2.5 million females experience some form of violence each year. Almost two of every three of these females are attacked by a relative or person known to them.

* The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found in a national survey that 34 percent of adults in the United States had witnessed a man beating his wife or girlfriend, and that 14 percent of women report that they have experienced violence from a husband or boyfriend.

* More than 1 million women seek medical assistance each year for injuries caused by battering.

* In 1992, the American Medical Association reported that as many as 1 in 3 women will be assaulted by a domestic partner in her lifetime — 4 million in any given year. ("When Violence Hits Home." Time. June 4, 1994).
* Among all female murder victims in 1992, 29% were slain by boyfriends or husbands
* The average prison sentence of men who kill their women partners is 2 to 6 years. Women who kill their partners are, on average, sentenced to 15 years. (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1989)

I love all these "REAL christians don’t do that" answers. That is a total load of crap. Domestic violence rates are highest in the Bible Belt states, along with teen pregnancy and abortion rates. So much for the fundamentalist types practicing what they preach. Given that 80+ percent of the US is "christian", no way could all these statistics all come from the remaining 20% of the population. "Christians" are big on denial when confronted with their dark side.

Melkahal… he was also free to rape her again and again for the rest of her life. Even give her to his friends if he wished. How is that punishing him?

Because in those days women were considered property. When the Males decided to shun the pagan way of life where the men and women held equal status in society they pushed the women into more of a slave or property position. When you do that the woman would become disposable in the eyes of the law of the day. When women were of equal status they were treated with respect and so if raped the men who did the deed were punished. It was a thing where men didn’t like it so the solution was to change their status in society. IE: monotheism which got rid of the goddess(es) and leaving men at the top of the chain.
